Borrowed books

As soon as I saw you

I remembered —

this morning there were dishes stinking 

in the sink; 

a blanket on the floor;

an unopened email. 

Have it all 

together, 

appear to

be on top of things.

That’s the goal.

That book,

the one you lent me, 

about a month ago,

the one about bugging out 

and making a plan,

the one about that guy who capitalized on his country’s economic collapse,

moved to Europe and wrote a book,

it’s gonna sit a while longer — 

there on the shelf

collecting dust like the rest

of my 

borrowed books.

Because as soon as I saw you

I remembered 

that I 

forgot

to give it back.
