Big bike, small bike. And the first snowball fight ever recorded.
Dear cycopaths,
Two Fridays ago, I published Issue #8 of the Weekly Cyco Gallery. Last week, we took a break to get gift ideas for the cyclist in your life. Which, I’ve heard, has been helpful for some of you. (I’m glad!)
Anyway, there were four choices in the poll two weeks ago: a red Trek in the desert, a GT hardtail in the blowing snow, a blue full-squish Pivot in the desert and a hardtail standing next to a balance bike.
You voted, and the picture that won was the big bike, small bike combo. Here’s the little story behind it.
We were still living in Pennsylvania. One Saturday afternoon, we decided to drive on the other side of the city (Pittsburgh) to visit a park that looked like a fun one. It had a pump track and some mountain bike trails and a big playground.
We had introduced our oldest daughter to the balance bike and she was just getting the hang of it. Sorta. I pushed her mostly, but she actually pushed herself for a bit on the pump track that day.
It was awesome. She loved it. We have a video of it somewhere.
And then when she got tired of that, the girls played on the playground with mom while I took some laps around the trail. Very cool trail. Called Dr. J at North Park. Check it out:
After the ride, I caught up with the girls and put my bike up on the roof next to the balance bike. It was then lunch time, so we went to Chick-fil-A — where I had to take my bike off the roof so I could drive under the drive-thru.
Good memory.
Alright everyone: I need more photos! Take a shot of your indoor set up, or of your bike on a cold, snowy day, or maybe on a hot-and-sunny day. Or maybe somewhere exotic. Doesn’t matter.
We want to see your bikes! And then vote on them!
Check your inboxes on Sunday for another installment of Defining the Ineffable. This week we talk with David Wiens, the executive director of the International Mountain Biking Association. It’s a good one. You won’t want to miss it.
And before I sign off, gotta share another video. I love that the first-ever recorded snow ball fight involved a bicycle. (And the guy riding it happened to be the funniest part of the video.)
Have a great weekend, folks!
